Life lesson from the Sci-Fi movie Gattaca (1997)

Gattaca is a sci-fi movie set in a dytopian future where people are bred genetically to create the ideal being. So in the movie, Vincent (Ethan Hawke) and Anton (Loren Dean) are brothers, but Vincent was born under the experiment to be genetically superior.

All their lives, Anton was better than Vincent in everything. But there was this final scene where Vincent challenges Anton to a swimming race in the ocean like they used to do in their childhood.

The challenge: Swim far as they could. First one to give up and turn for the shore loses.

Vincent (Ethan Hawke)- The weaker one wins in the race.

When asked how he did it, he said he gave every ounce of his energy and saved nothing for the returning back.

Anton may be stronger but conservative. He held back.

Lesson: In order to succeed, you must be willing to fail. You must not fear lost and defeat.

Well..if you fail,

  • you got yourself a great story to tell
  • you got some serious edge next time you go for it
